What country is Afghanistan's best friend?
Sixty-nine per cent of Afghan people chose India as Afghanistan's 'best friend' country, according to a recent survey.
Six countries border Afghanistan: Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and China. These countries have widely different interests related to the conflict in the country, and they have pursued widely different political strategies.
Since the mid-1970s, Pakistan initiated support and military training for the Afghan opposition. In the time of the war Pakistan became the central element in the international efforts against the Soviet military presence in Afghanistan.
A recent survey in Kabul of 1,259 people shows that Afghanistan rely mostly on Turkey, and consider Turkey to be Afghanistan's one and only true, best friend. Afghanistan was also the second nation to recognise the Republic of Turkey, after the Soviet Union, on 1 March 1923.
The Russian-backed Afghan government collapsed in 1992. However, Russo-Afghan relations have improved somewhat in the years following the conflict. Russia now has an embassy in Kabul and a consulate-general in Mazar-e-Sharif, and Afghanistan has an embassy in Moscow.

What is an Afghan ally?
For more than 20 years, Afghan Allies served alongside U.S. troops, diplomats, and other frontline government employees as interpreters, translators, cultural advisors, drivers, security, and confidants. Due to this service our allies and their families became targets of anti-American violence.

Bilateral relations
Since the early 1960s, Canada has provided humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan initially in response to a series of natural disasters. In 1968, Canada formally established diplomatic relations and, in 2003, opened its Embassy in Kabul and appointed its first resident ambassador.
In the aftermath of the 2008 Indian embassy bombing in Kabul, the Afghan Foreign Ministry quoted India as a "brother country" and the relationship between the two as one which "no enemy can hamper". During the 15th SAARC summit in Colombo, further pledges were made by India for ongoing and forthcoming projects.
